The Cottage Clock-Cutting the Fretwork
On the previous page we cut the inside of the spiral. At this point we can either backtrack towards the entry hole or continue around the side and the outside. I don't have a hard & fast rule yet. For this example, let's continue around the side of the spiral.
| Like we did on the teardrop cut-out, first back the blade a small bit down the kerf, about 1/4". | |
| Angle the blade towards the other side, and then turn to meet in the point of the angle. The goal is a sharp corner. | |
| Back up out of the corner, and with the saw off, turn the blank 180 degrees. Place the back of the blade in the corner. | |
| With the slight bit of side pressure, get the blade to bite into the uncut wood. As you can see in this picture I didn't get a good bite into the wood. You can use the side of the blade to trim it off, or just leave it if not too noticeable. Remember you're looking at a #1 blade; these close-ups magnify every little mistake of my not-so-great cutting! | |
| Continue cutting until you reach the next corner. |
On the next page we'll finish off this spiral.
