A comment on the post about composting wood chips had me look up a paper on walnut’s relationship to other plants. Here’s a discussion by Purdue University, including lists of some plants that are sensitive to walnut trees. Your mileage (and plants may vary: One of the more sensitive plants is the hackberry tree. Scrollsaws and Garden Soil

Yes, there really is a relation there! When you have a planer, you generate a lot of chips. The question is what to do with them. You can throw them out in the trash, but that can be a lot of trash to be picked up. What I do is establish a compost pile. [...]

First Snow
November 18th, 2008 · No Comments
We had our first taste of “frozen globil warmin’” last night. Not much, but enough that they were playing bumper cars on the interstates this morning (including the police–they lost two cruisers in single-car accidents; that’s got to be a little embarrassing for them! ) The first snow in this area is always pretty [...]

Nothing at all to do with the scrollsaw…

Nothing on the saw for this post; just the first of the “fancy” daylilies blooming. Selma Rose had it’s first bloom yesterday. We’ve had stellas blooming, but this the first of the “pretty” ones. Enjoy!

First Scape!
May 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment
This post has absolutely nothing to do with the scrollsaw. As folks who’ve been around me know I also collect various daylily hybrids. One important event of late spring/early summer is the First Scape. It signifies the start of daylily season, which peaks here around 4 July and can stretch into September. I didn’t get [...]

A Flower Plate
May 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Something totally unrelated to scrollsawing this morning: Jenny got some plates and glasses at the local Goodwill, and put together this arrangement from flowers in the front garden. There’s hiding amongst there some red dogwoods, encore azaleas, and saucer magnolia flowers.
