Mahogany is a very nice wood on the scrollsaw. It likes to sit flat, and cuts smooth. I took the remaining piece of the mahogany short I cut last week and resawed it into 1/8″ thick pieces. One advantage of non-surfaced lumber is you can get more for your wood dollar. Rough is cheaper than [...]

Mahogany
November 16th, 2008 · 3 Comments
I cut out some butterflies from the mahogany today. Mahogany is one of those great scrollsaw woods: It cuts smoothly, doesn’t tend to warp badly, great color, great smell. It’s main drawback is expense. I really need some more butterflies, as I’m down to 7. I got a run of 15 cut out tonight, and [...]

Mahogany Butterflies
April 22nd, 2008 · 2 Comments
I finally got around to putting together all those bugs that have been sitting in the trays for about a month. I figured that with the show coming up, I’d better get them ready to sell! Here they are after their oil bath. The Bull also took a dip, along with the tray.

Another shot of the “Mask Pen Holder”
April 14th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Looking back, I noticed I never put up a picture of the finished Mask Pen Holder. In case you haven’t been following, this is a pattern drawn by Pedro at www.finescrollsaw.com. It’s one of his “simpler” plans; assuming you have some sawing experience, you should be able to cut it out in a [...]

Mask Pen Holder revisited
April 9th, 2008 · No Comments
The last time I showed this piece (designed by Pedro over at finescrollsaw.com) I had cut out a bloodwood bottom. It looked great; however, the bloodwood proceeded to warp horribly. The wood is strong, and there wasnt enough strength in the canarywood to keep it flat. I shelved the pen holders. Recently I was resawing [...]

One Hummer down, One to go

At least of the mahogany ones–I still has a sassafras face part that needs a walnut trellis. Anyway, I got the pendulums cut out this morning before church, and afterwards I put everything together. One of the clocks has been BLO dipped and is waiting to cure; the other still needs a bath.
The drum sander [...]

Hummingbird Trellis
April 5th, 2008 · No Comments
I did get the trellis cut out for the Hummingbird Trellis clock this morning. I did something a little different this time. If you remember, I had two patterns of the trellis on one blank. The mahogany cuts very easily, too easily for 1/2″ thick blanks. So, after I cut out the outlines [...]

Mahogany Bugs
April 4th, 2008 · No Comments
I did manage to finish cutting out the butterfly wings tonight. Like I mentioned before, the blanks are stacked 4 high (1/8″ each, total 1/2″), which gives me 2 pairs of wings per pattern. There were 5 patterns of 4 different types; that gives me wingsets for 10 bugs.
Here is the stack with the fretwork [...]

Oops, too thin
April 3rd, 2008 · No Comments
We had to go to the library tonight, so not much scrolling. Did manage to cut out the fret holes on 2 sets of butterflies in the mahogany. One problem I had was the stack was too short (only 4 layers of 1/8″ mahogany). Mahogany cuts very well and easily, so the blade cut almost [...]

Back on the saw
April 2nd, 2008 · No Comments
Well, almost! After today’s AutoCAD session, I went and cut up some mahogany for the Hummingbird Trellis clocks. Sometimes you get lucky, and tonight was one of those times. I had originally cut out and glued up two blank panels, one for each of the mahogany clocks. While putting the pattern on the first, I [...]
