While down in Bogue Chitto we also cut open a few different logs that were lying around. The first is a small sweet gum (sometimes a.k.a. red gum). This is normally a trash tree, since it is very hard to dry without it turning into a pretzel. However, it is a nicely grained wood. The [...]

The Cherry Board
December 29th, 2008 · No Comments
Not much on the saw today, as I spent most of the day cleaning up around the house and scanning in lots of documents. I did get one of the cherry boards I brought up from Bogue Chitto, and you can see it below. It’s about 6″ wide and 8′ long, and is [...]

Sawing Cherry
December 23rd, 2008 · No Comments
Yesterday we took a cherry log and cut it down to a cant. It was a little cool and a little late, so we stopped for the day. This is what things looked like at that point:
It took us the entire afternoon, but we got about 110 bdft of 4/4 cherry. A couple of boards [...]

All the news folks are hyping this as Katrina II. I’ve been following it on the National Weather Service site for a while, and they’re saying it’s going to be a pretty bad storm *somewhere* on the north-central gulf coast. For the farm, they’ve got us at 60-70% chance of tropical storm-force winds, [...]

Home-grown Cherries
July 20th, 2008 · No Comments
You may have noticed a little irregularity on the posting lately, along with few-to-none pictures of new scrollsawing–I hauled a load of household goods down to storage in Mississippi, as well as bringing back a couple of boards for a set of shelves and a flagbox. After looking (& pricing!) the wide 1x lumber at [...]

Yellow Pine from the Sawmill
July 15th, 2008 · No Comments
In a post yesterday I mentioned we had cut an old-growth type yellow pine. I got some pictures of the wood today.
In this picture you can see the growth rings. After squaring off the cant we just sliced through it, getting five 10″ boards and a pair of thinner boards we had to cut down [...]

“Old Growth” Yellow Pine
July 14th, 2008 · No Comments
While clearing a spot for a transformer, Dad had to cut down a small, 12″ pine. I came across the butt log, and noticed the rings on it–it must have been pushing 80 years. While not true old growth, the pine did have very tight rings and decent sized heart. It was probably a cull [...]

Cutting a Cherry Crotch Log
March 31st, 2008 · 2 Comments
Despite the trip from H-E-Double Toothpick, one thing we were able to accomplish was cutting up one of the cherry logs. We started with the crotch log, which was about 4′ long. Dad put on another clamp on the mill, which lets us cut logs down to about 3′ long. Here is the log sitting [...]

Nothing broke on the truck today!!!
March 29th, 2008 · No Comments
Even though we ran the truck and trailer through the woods to unload it, nothing broke. I did come about 2″ from a post oak, but no dents either. As we’re getting the house ready to sell, we needed to bring a load of stuff down for storage.
While in Bogue Chitto we also sawed up [...]

Sawmill in the Shed
March 24th, 2008 · No Comments
Dad’s got the sawmill shed up, and the sawmill parked inside. No sides yet, though. If we get time this week, we may try to cut some of those cherry logs. At prices approaching $8/bdft, I hope we can get some good lumber.
